During my doctoral studies, I focused on the theme of assimilation between clothing and environment. This work was presented as part of my research outcomes, alongside an academic thesis.

This project centers on women who relocated to Tokyo from various regions across Japan. I conducted a survey with over 100 women from rural areas, exploring how their perceptions of Tokyo and their hometowns shifted before and after the move, particularly in relation to social issues such as peer pressure, outdated customs, and women’s social advancement.

These women navigate a complex mental landscape, oscillating between assimilation and dissimilation. Their responses revealed that the sense of freedom they experienced in Tokyo transformed their relationship with fashion. For some, fashion became a form of rebellion against the conservative values of their hometowns; for others, it was an opportunity to cultivate a unique personal style.

Through my collection, I visually communicate these often overlooked experiences, emphasizing the importance of making invisible social struggles visible. The collection comprises seven dresses that symbolize the evolution of fashion and mindset throughout their journey―from the formal, uniform-like silhouettes before moving, to increasingly glamorous styles, culminating in the confident expression of individuality found in Tokyo.
